The ski circuit of Saalbach Hinterglemm is situated in the midst of the marvellous Pinzgau mountains in the Salzburg region. Both villages are located between the Massif Leoganger Steinberge and the gentle slopes of the Pinzgauer Grasberge mountains. A number of World Championship events have been hosted in Saalbach Hinterglemm. In 2002, the Austrian skier Hilde Gerg won the down-hill run of Saalbach, Pernilla Wiberg came second and the Italian, Isolde Kostner won the bronze medal.

Saalbach Hinterglemm is a paradise for all mountain-bike fans who will find Single-Trails crossing the Alps, Free-Rides on the Reiterkogel and the beautiful Bike-World at Leogang. There is the right trail for everyone! The World Mountainbike Amateur Championships has already taken place twice in Saalbach Hinterglemm. At the World Games of Mountainbiking, competitors show their ability and skills in the following disciplines - half marathon, marathon, Cross Country, Free-Ride and Dual-Eleminator.

In 1996 a strange phenomenon happened in Saalbach Hinterglemm. The public weather forecast showed a field of low pressure on Poland and Austria was situated within its sphere of influence. Fresh, dry air was arriving in from Scandinavia. In Saalbach (cloudless sky during the whole day) the minimum temperature in the morning was minus 10,6°C, and in the late morning about minus -6°C. At the same time humidity reached about 85%, later about 65-70%. Generally, when there are high pressures of this kind the region next to the Alps and the deepest Alpine valleys are covered by fog. However, at the same time there is clear sunshine on the peaks. That’s the methereological reason for this halogen phenomenon. A halogenous phenomenon is so-called when at least five different types of halogenous phenomena are visibile at the same time. It seems as thought the sky is full of rainbows. In ancient times these phenomena were considered divine.
